    It wouldn’t be quite right if Cleveland fans did not have their hopes of finally winning a championship at their highest before their dreams are dashed before their eyes. It always has to be heart-wrenching. This is nothing new.

    Why did John Calvin who believed in predestination feel the need to kill heretics like Servetus considering that there’s no way the elect could be damned by such men since they’re elect and their destiny is sealed? OOOOH!!!!

    After reading the comments here, I stand by that opinion. More than ever, I hasten to add.

    Not cool. Not cool at all. Matthew is simply pointing out that this is not the correct forum for the questions you are raising, so calling him a “devil-worshiping ignoramus” (even if it is meant as a joke) is just uncalled for.

    But since you brought it up, perhaps if you took the time to learn the history of the Calvin-Servetus episode (which Mike has previously covered on this blog and dozens of scholars have addressed elsewhere) you might realize that your summation is a bald misrepresentation of the events. But, then again, perhaps you simply prefer to slander those who have been dead for nearly five centuries and attack those who recognize the enduring wisdom of those who have changed the course of history. So unless you have something more enlightened to add than “Calvin was a murderer” or another insult for those of us who have no use for your unoriginal and inflammatory posts, we would all appreciate it if you would follow the universal motherly advice: if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

    Calvin admits that he is the one who had Servetus burned at the stake. He was so roundly criticized within his own time that he wrote a book to defend his actions, in which he says he would do it again and describes Servetus as bellowing like a dog saying ‘misericordia’ over and over. But I wouldn’t expect his illiterate followers to know any of this.
